Medical oxygen is oxygen supplied as a medicinal product for medical applications, meeting defined requirements for quality, labelling, manufacturing and distribution. For professional users, in addition to gas quality, safe supply, suitable compressed gas cylinders, appropriate fittings and traceable supply are particularly important.
Medical oxygen is a medicinal product
In Germany, medical oxygen is subject to drug law. For specific use, the respective product labelling, professional or patient information leaflet and the requirements of the medically responsible person are decisive.
How is medical oxygen supplied?
For practices, clinics and emergency services, medical oxygen is supplied in compressed gas cylinders, among other ways. The cylinders are provided with technical container markings and a drug-related labelling. Depending on the cylinder size and filling pressure, a different gas supply is available.

Which components are required for withdrawal?
For cylinders without an integrated combi-valve, a pressure reducer suitable for the gas type, cylinder pressure and connection is required. Depending on the system, an oxygen hose, mask, nasal cannula or a compatible medical device may also be needed.

Why are labelling and test data important?
For an oxygen cylinder, technical container data and the labelling of the medicinal product must be considered separately. The technical inspection period concerns the compressed gas cylinder; the usability of the contents results from the drug-related labelling.
Transport and storage
Filled oxygen cylinders with compressed oxygen are subject to the requirements of dangerous goods law. Additional technical and organisational regulations apply to operational storage and safe handling. Cylinders must be secured against falling; oxygen-carrying components must be kept free of oil and grease.

Supply and exchange
Professional users should organise the oxygen supply in such a way that cylinder stock, expiry date and resupply are regularly checked. An exchange system can reduce downtime because a filled replacement cylinder is provided and the suitable empty cylinder is returned.
