Why nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is an anesthetic and in small doses has a pain-relieving, anti-anxiety and, to a small extent, analgesic effect. It leads to a kind of "foggy state" and an elevated mood. Because of its short duration of action, it is easy to control. Patients describe a pleasant and relaxing effect, as well as a certain distance from what is happening during the treatment. The state is often described as a kind of hypnosis or trance. This allows the doctor/dentist and the treating team to work more relaxed and effectively.

Effects and Risks of Nitrous Oxide

Since nitrous oxide leaves the human body almost completely in the same form and quantity when exhaled, it is not metabolized or converted.

With repeated use, habituation (development of tolerance) can occur. In order to achieve the desired effect, an ever-increasing amount of gas is then required. This in turn can lead to psychological dependence. However, physical dependence is not known. No significant impairment of the function of the heart or other organs is known.

The treatment/inhalation should be carried out while sitting or lying down, as dizziness or loss of consciousness can lead to serious injuries from falls.
