Technical inspection (TÜV) of the oxygen cylinder
The technical inspection of a compressed gas cylinder – the so-called TÜV – is crucial for the cylinder's fillability , but not for the use of already filled cylinders.
Important:
-
The TÜV is only relevant at the time of filling .
-
A bottle that has already been filled may still be used even after the TÜV has expired .
-
A valid TÜV certificate is only required for refilling .
The TÜV stamp is not attached as a sticker , but is permanently stamped into the bottle body , usually on the shoulder of the bottle .
Pay attention to the last number combination in the lower row – this indicates the month and year of manufacture . From this date, the bottle is TÜV-approved for 10 years .
Example: “07/15” stands for July 2015 → valid until July 2025.
If the bottle was later inspected, the new inspection date is also stamped on it – usually additionally painted over with silver paint .
Shelf life of medical oxygen (according to the Medicines Act)
In addition to the technical testing of the cylinder, the shelf life of the medical oxygen itself , which is classified as a medicinal product, also applies.
The medical oxygen has a shelf life of 35 months after filling.
This period begins on the day of bottling and is indicated on a sticker on the bottle .
The sticker contains the following information:
-
Batch number
-
Bottling date
-
Usage period (e.g. "use by...")
Please note: Even if the bottle is technically in good condition, the contents may no longer be used after this period has expired – regardless of the TÜV condition of the bottle.
Conclusion
To use your oxygen cylinder safely, two things must be observed:
-
TÜV of the bottle – decides on the technical approval for filling (valid for 10 years from production or last test).
-
Shelf life of medical oxygen – is 35 months from filling and is documented on the sticker.
Both pieces of information are important independently of each other and must be taken into account when handling medical oxygen.
